It has been a busy couple
of weeks for members of Winchester Judo and Martial Arts club
competing in several different competitions.
Jessamy Tyrrell aged 15
represented Hampshire in the Inter-Counties Team Championships
held in Worthing. Volunteering to fight in a weight group above
her normal u63kg category, size and weight proved not to be a
problem as Hampshire girls beat opponents from Surrey, Sussex
and Kent to claim the gold medal for the 2nd
successive year.

The following weekend club
coach Glen Judd
fought in the High Wycombe masters championships,
but had to be content with a 5th place finish after
narrowly losing the bronze medal fight in the men’s u81kg
category. The contest went into the golden score where his
opponent managed to get the vital throw with 1 minute remaining
on the clock.

On Sunday the juniors were
fighting in the Hampshire Yellow Belt and under championships in
Portsmouth. Victor Applebaum aged 10 fought in the u27kg
category but had the misfortune to be in the same pool as the
eventual silver and bronze medallist, but still preformed well
winning 1 of his 3 fights in his first ever competition.
Brothers Grant and Byron
Stansfield had a fantastic day. Byron aged 12 who competed in
the u38kg section lost his 1st fight when he was well
in control but returned to produce some outstanding throws
winning his next 3 fights before losing to the eventual gold
medallist.
In his bronze medal fight
Byron threw his opponent in under 30 seconds to earn a
well-deserved bronze medal. Elder brother Grant aged 14, fought
in the u46kg section. Grant completely dominated the group
winning all four of his fights in under a minute with a fine
display of throws, counters and hold-downs to win the gold medal
and become Hampshire Yellow Belt and Under Champion.
