Winchester Judo & Martial Arts Club

Welcome to the Judo Pages !

Judo was founded by Jigoro Kano and has become both a traditional martial art and modern Olympic sport.

It makes a great form of exercise that can be enjoyed by both children and adults alike. Those who would like to compete and win trophies will be glad to know that there are many contests organized that can be entered. Those wanting to keep fit or learn a practical form of self-defence are also well catered for.

Love it or hate it, the technical grading syllabus is upon us. To help you understand and to get to grips with the new system of grading, we thought you might like to print off a copy for yourself. Courtesy of the BJA of course.

Judo in Action

Juniors pitting their wits! A busy senior session It looks worse than it is! Technique is everything

Special Junior Feature

The Juniors play a very important (and quite noisy!) part of the club.

The martial arts are a good way for children and young adults to learn confidence, make new friends and have fun. The lessons learned can also have positive benefits ranging from increasing fitness, learning self defence skills and self discipline.

Both the Judo and Aikido sections run special sessions for juniors aged 8 and over, where they can learn and have fun at the same time. The sessions are geared towards allowing children to learn without exposing them to some of the harder adult techniques.

The sessions are designed with fun in mind and combine exercise, martial arts and games into a single session run by experienced instructors.

To encourage juniors and give them something further to work towards there are regular gradings. These allow the rewarding of special certificates and sometimes the upgrading of the belt worn to another colour. We have found that this is a popular scheme amongst the juniors.
